Revealed: Countries most obsessed with online shopping, 2025

E-commerce has significantly changed the way people shop around the world, as highlighted in a recent report from CEOWORLD magazine’s Global Digital Overview 2025. This extensive report ranks different countries based on the percentage of retail purchases made online, providing insights into current digital consumption trends. The United States stands out as the leader, with 47.54% of retail spending occurring online, followed by China, Japan, India, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

The report assessed countries based on various factors, including the time individuals spend online weekly, the percentage of people shopping online monthly, and the average share of income spent online. Currently, there are 2.64 billion online buyers globally, which accounts for over 33% of the world’s population. In terms of figures, total retail e-commerce sales worldwide reach approximately $6,310 billion, with the United States alone contributing $1,072.81 billion.

The United States, China, Japan, and India Shop Online the Most: Interestingly, 48% of online shoppers abandon their carts primarily due to high costs, resulting in around $22 billion in annual losses for e-commerce retailers. Additionally, Amazon.com continues to dominate as the most visited online retail site worldwide by traffic. Clothing and shoes, food and groceries and fashion and electronics items were some of the most popular online purchases.
