Gohar Hambardzumyan: Empowering Immigrants Through Education and Opportunity

Gohar Hambardzumyan is launching the Bridgeway Institute to bridge language barriers and create pathways to success for underserved immigrant communities.

From Immigrant Struggles to National Impact: The Vision Behind Bridgeway Institute for English & Academic Success

For Gohar Hambardzumyan, the journey of becoming a linguist and educator was not just a career choice, it was a calling. As an immigrant herself, she knows firsthand the hurdles that multilingual individuals face when trying to integrate into U.S. academic and professional systems. Now, as she prepares to launch the Bridgeway Institute for English & Academic Success, Hambardzumyan is set to turn her personal experiences into a national movement aimed at breaking down barriers and creating educational opportunities for underserved immigrant communities.

Hambardzumyan’s story is deeply intertwined with her mission: to provide quality education, workforce development, and college access to immigrant populations and multilingual individuals. The Institute, still in development, promises to offer a comprehensive solution to three critical national challenges: the shortage of ESL teachers, the adult English-language gap, and the barriers immigrant students face in higher education.

The Mission: Bridging Language, Culture, and Opportunity

The vision behind Bridgeway Institute is rooted in a profound belief in the transformative power of education. Hambardzumyan is determined to build a center that provides more than just language instruction. She envisions a place where immigrant communities can access ESL programs, professional retraining, and higher education support all under one roof. Through a blend of online and in-person courses, Bridgeway aims to bridge language gaps, cultural divides, and provide pathways for economic mobility, workforce inclusion, and college readiness.

“The mission of the Bridgeway Institute is to help multilingual adults, immigrant educators, and first-generation students succeed in the academic and professional world,” Hambardzumyan explains. “It’s about giving people the tools they need to unlock their potential.”

The ultimate goal is to create a holistic system where language instruction, workforce development, and college preparation are interconnected. By doing so, Bridgeway aims to address the current shortage of qualified ESL teachers, support economic advancement through language acquisition, and expand college access for underserved students.

A Journey Shaped by Personal Experience

As an educator with years of experience teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and academic English across Europe, Armenia, and the U.S., Hambardzumyan’s path has been shaped by both personal experience and professional expertise. A linguist by training, she holds a Master’s Degree in Pedagogy and a Bachelor’s in Linguistics and Intercultural Communication.

In December 2025 Gohar Hambardzumyan was invited as a jury member to the AMERICAN BUSINESS EXPO AWARD. Her  expertise and dedication have been invaluable in evaluating and selecting the best participants.

Her international teaching experience has given her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by multilingual individuals, especially those from immigrant communities. “I have seen immigrant families struggle to navigate the complexities of the U.S. education system,” she says. “I’ve witnessed talented foreign-trained teachers unable to re-enter the workforce, and students who are unable to access higher education because of language barriers.”

It’s this firsthand knowledge of these systemic gaps that inspired her to take action and create a solution with a broad, national impact.

Contributions to Research

The scholarly activity of Gohar Hambardzumyan reflects a specific research agenda in the area of applied linguistics and TESOL, focusing on effectiveness, interculturalization, and innovation in language learning. Gohar’s peer-reviewed literature deals with key concerns related to ESL learning in an adult population.

Some of her research work is reflected in her article, “The Role of Intercultural Communication Competence in Second-Language Teaching: Implications for U.S. TESOL Programs,” published in The American Journal of Social Science and Education Innovations, where she examined culturally responsive second language teaching practices and TESOL education in the US.

Furthermore, Hambardzumyan has published two peer-reviewed articles in the European Journal of English Language and Literature Studies ( EJELLS). “The Effectiveness of Task-Based Learning for Improving Speaking Fluency among Adult ESL Learners” studies the training effects on the acquisition of speaking fluency in ESL learning, and “AI-Driven Vocabulary Acquisition for ESL Learners: A Comparative Study of Human-Guided versus AI-Assisted Learning” examines the learning potentials for teaching ESL vocabulary acquisition with the help of artificial intelligence.

Taken together, these publications indicate Hambardzumyan’s dedication to enhancing research-based ESL instruction, as well as his contributions to international research circles related to language instruction.

Tackling National Challenges: A Multi-Pronged Approach

Bridgeway Institute is designed to address three significant challenges facing the nation:

  • ESL & Bilingual Teacher Shortages: Many states, including California, are facing a shortage of qualified ESL instructors. Hambardzumyan plans to offer teacher retraining programs, U.S. classroom culture training, and specialized ESL methodology courses to help immigrant educators re-enter the workforce.
  • Adult English-Language Gaps & Workforce Barriers: Millions of adults lack the English skills necessary for employment, healthcare, and everyday life. Bridgeway’s hybrid learning model will provide accessible ESL programs that meet the needs of working adults, healthcare professionals, and individuals seeking to improve their civic participation.
  • Higher-Education Barriers for Immigrant & First-Generation Students: The admissions process in the U.S. is often complex, inequitable, and inaccessible, especially for immigrant families. Bridgeway aims to provide college admissions advising, essay coaching, and academic readiness support for first-generation college students.

Through these three areas of focus, Bridgeway will help create lasting pathways to success for those who need it most, enabling them to contribute to a stronger, more inclusive workforce.

The Unique Approach of Bridgeway Institute

What sets Bridgeway Institute apart is its ability to integrate language learning with workforce development and higher education preparation into a single, scalable pathway. The Institute will offer a hybrid learning system, making it accessible to learners in rural areas, low-income neighborhoods, and those who cannot attend in-person classes.

Additionally, the focus on supporting immigrant educators alongside students is a key differentiator. Bridgeway will not only provide language instruction but also offer specialized professional development for teachers, ensuring that those who are already skilled can find new opportunities within the U.S. education system.

By combining evidence-based TESOL methods with AI-driven learning technology and workforce-aligned ESL programs, Bridgeway is positioning itself as a leader in the evolving field of adult education.

Building a National Legacy

Hambardzumyan’s vision for the next five years is ambitious yet attainable. Within five years of launching, she aims to retrain over 500 immigrant educators, improve English proficiency for more than 5,000 adults, and support 1,000 first-generation and immigrant students in their pursuit of higher education. The Institute’s online platform will expand its reach to underserved communities across the U.S., while partnerships with community colleges and nonprofits will help extend its impact.

“I envision a future where the Bridgeway Institute is a national academy, known for its commitment to equitable education and workforce development,” says Hambardzumyan. “Ultimately, I hope to create a legacy that strengthens immigrant participation in U.S. education and fosters lasting economic mobility for multilingual communities.”
